13 A PIONEER IN ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTISE The success story of Lahti as a frontrunner of environmental expertise goes back to the restoration of Lake Vesijärvi in the 1980s. Today, the region is one of the most important clusters of environmental expertise and businesses in the Nordic countries. As much as 95 percent of the municipal waste produced in the Lahti region is utilised. The Kujala area in Lahti is Finland’s most important business and innovation centre in the recycling industry – and also a popular target for site visits. A MEETING PLACE FOR CLEANTECH GROWTH COMPANIES AND INVESTORS Cleantech Venture Day, the largest investor event in the cleantech sector in Northern Europe, brings hundreds of investors and growth companies together in Lahti every year. The event has generated a wide array of services supporting the growth of cleantech companies. EXERCISE AND EXPERIENCES Lahti distinguishes itself from other Finnish cities as a centre of health and wellbeing with a special focus on sports and exercise. The area is home to the Pajulahti and Vierumäki sports institutes, both offi cially recognised as Olympic Training Centers by the Finnish Olympic Committee, which provide a wide range of professional training in physical education. The institutes also off er highquality expertise in sports coaching. A TRENDSETTER IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN The companies in the Lahti Region have been drawing competitiveness from design for decades. Design produces new business activities, functional public services and better living environments. Cooperation with R&D, designers, design students and users has given rise to numerous success stories.
