Kuva 9. Uskomatonta kylmäpäisyyttä osoitettiin Suomessa vielä 1953 lääkintöhallituksen epidemiologin todetessa, ettei
polioepidemiasta voinut vielä puhua, kun tapauksia ei ollut edes 250!
Kuva 10. Rautakeuhkoon joutui, jos askendoiva polio lamasi hengityksen. Suomessa käytettiin edistyksellisempiä hengityskoneita,

mutta ne edellyttivät trakeostomiaa.
maan kerätyt likavesinäytteet olivat olleet poliovirusnegatiivisia
niin kauan, että tarkkailu
oli lopetettu. Kun ne aloitettiin uudestaan,
perimältään hyvin vieras poliovirus 3 olikin
levinnyt koko maahan. Tartunta lienee saatu
ulkomailta. Pikkuepidemiaan sairastui kymmenen
eri-ikäistä potilasta, lähinnä aikuisia.
Yksi potilaista kuoli ja muutamille jäi halvaustila.
Episodin seurauksensa lähes kaikki suomalaiset
saivat ”sokeripalarokotuksen” alkuvuonna
1985 (15). Se rauhoitti tilanteen jälleen
(Kuva 2).
Isorokko ja polio – toinen jo eradikoitu ihmisen
vitsaus, toinen ehkä pian juurittu. Kuinka
paljon ne ovatkaan meitä opettaneet!
